VIDEO: Harry Connick Jr. Offended By Jackson Jive
The clip above is from a popular Australian TV show called Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Harry Connick Jr. was a special guest judge on a live episode recently and he was so offended by this skit that he told the host: “If I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably – I definitely – wouldn’t have done it.”
Connick Jr. sat stoned faced throughout Jackson Jive’s performance and gave them a score of 0 out of 10, commenting that in the United States, the show would have been pulled off the air if such a skit had been played.
He went on to say: “I just wanted to say on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart.”
Too bad I wasn’t in the audience to tell him that many black folks make themselves look like baffoons all on their own, they no longer need the white man’s help. Has Connick seen any programming on BET for example?
As shameful as this is to admit, when the white dude runs out on stage wearing white face, I nearly pissed myself laughing so hard. I didn’t ‘get it’ until white dude in white face entered.
This reminds me of the time I worked in the film acquisitions department for an urban entertainment production company. I was told too many times not to sell urban content to the Australian market because the buyers were very racist. So the fact that Australians find this skit funny is not at all surprising to me. All that’s missing from this skit is a pack of wild dingos eating a band of aborigines.
