Buju Banton Sentenced to Ten Years

I guess the Grammy-win and hit records weren’t enough to keep food on the table because reggae singer Buju Banton has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a large cocaine trafficking deal in 2009.

The judge threw out a gun conviction, which would have added another five years to his sentence. Banton’s attorney said with time already served and good behavior, he could be out in six years.

His attorney contended that Banton deserved a lower sentence because of his limited participation in the drug buy, his charitable work in Jamaica and his otherwise clean record.

Banton received the lowest sentence legally allowed.

In a statement he wrote after the sentencing, Banton said: “The days that lie ahead are filled with despair, but I have courage and grace and I’m hopeful, and that is sufficient to carry me through.”

  1. Always sad to see someone get put behind bars for drugs. Yes, he has done a lot of charitable work. Also has done a lot of gay bashing.
